A Rust service layer made an internal tool faster everywhere except the browser. Growing up waiting on walleye at the Lorain pier taught me to notice where the current stalls. We applied the same patience to profile the React bundle.

Web Vitals showed LCP hovering around 3.1s on mid-tier plant laptops. Hydration and a chart bundle were the drags. We cached critical API responses at the edge, streamed data via React Server Components, and swapped the chart suite for lean SVG utilities.

After the change, TTI improved by ~32% and P95 LCP dropped under 2.2s. Lesson: watch for hidden currents — whether that’s lake chop or hydration work — before throwing more horsepower at the problem.
